Hunter Chang is a Chinese-American composer and conductor from Chicago, IL, now based in Los Angeles, CA, and Boston, MA.
A versatile composer for film & TV as well as concert works, he blends traditional orchestration with modern edginess to enhance narratives across mediums. His music, known for conveying complex emotions and enriching stories, creates a timeless yet contemporary resonance that captivates audiences in both cinemas and concert halls.
His sweeping, character-driven orchestral scores reflect his expertise in classical Romantic-era writing, and are enriched by his professional experience writing jazz, electronic, and rock. Hunter ensures that live-recorded musicians—and often an orchestra—feature in all his scores, bringing a profound, human element that resonates with audiences.
Hunter has served as the lead composer on over 30 projects in the past decade, including full features, independent shorts, documentaries, and video games. Recent notable works include Year One (dir. Lauren Loesberg, starring Elizabeth Yu and Emma Raimi), Where It Happened (dir. Raissa Reis), and Valley of Hype (by Yahoo! Finance, 1 million+ streams). His films have been recognized at prestigious film festivals globally, including the London Lift-Off Film Festival, Provincetown Film Festival, Chicago Cine Festival, NFFTY Film Festival, Chinese American Film Festival, UK Offline Film Festival, and more.
His compositions have been premiered, recorded, and performed around the world by esteemed ensembles including the Grammy Award-winning choir, The Crossing, the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica (OSN), the Budapest Art Orchestra, the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra (CUSO), several Northwestern University Bienen School of Music ensembles, and several elite groups at Cow on the Wall Studios in Los Angeles.
Hunter holds a BM in Music Composition, with minors in Music Technology and Commercial Music, from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music. His musical training began at the Music Institute of Chicago, the Interlochen Center for the Arts, and in a Green Day cover band in 4th Grade with his friend Will.
